It started with a photo.

Not a sales pitch, not a breeder recommendation, not years of research into Swiss livestock genetics. Just a photo, taken by a breeder in New Zealand, of a sheep unlike anything we had ever seen. That black face. That dense, crimped white fleece. That expression that somehow managed to look both ancient and completely endearing at the same time.
We were done. We didn't know it yet, but we were done.
That photo set us on a path that led to Valais Blacknose of Lovers Lane in Northeast Ohio, a farm built around a breed that has humbled us, challenged us, and rewarded us in ways we didn't expect. If you're here because you saw a photo too, we understand completely. And we want to tell you what came after ours.
From Breed-Up to Fullblood, Our Journey
Like many operations that fell in love with this breed, we didn't start at the top. We began with breed-up stock, the F1, F2, and F3 percentage animals that were the most accessible entry point into Valais Blacknose breeding in the US at the time. We learned from that process. We're grateful for it.
But when we had success with our fullblood Swiss embryo program, something shifted. The difference in type, consistency, and breed character was undeniable. We made a conscious decision to move our entire focus to fullblood animals, not because breed-up programs don't have value, but because fullblood is where our heart landed. Every animal on our farm today (we have one exception) traces directly back to fullblood Swiss embryos. That's the program we've committed to, and it's the only one we'll put our name on, humbly, and with full awareness of how much we're still learning.
The Hardest Part Nobody Talks About
The Fullblood Valais Blacknose breed was developed over centuries in the Swiss Alps. The climate there, cool, dry, high altitude, is nothing like most of the United States. When you bring these animals here, you are asking them to adapt to humidity, heat, regional forage, and parasite pressures that their genetics were never designed for. That learning curve is real, and it doesn't end.

We've spent years figuring out how to adjust their nutrition, manage their health, and help them genuinely thrive in our environment, not just survive it. Parasites and nutrition have been a few of our learning curves. So has understanding how the seasonal shifts in Ohio affect an animal built for mountain conditions. We're still learning. We expect we always will be.
We share this not to discourage you, but because we think you deserve the honest version of this breed, not just the beautiful photos. The photos are real. So is the work.
What Fullblood Actually Means
In the US Valais Blacknose market, the terminology can get confusing fast. Fullblood means 100% Swiss genetics, animals that trace entirely back to fullblood imported embryos or semen, with no breed-up in their lineage. It is not the same as purebred, and it is not the same as a high-percentage F4 or F5 animal, even if those animals are absolutely lovely in their own right with how they look and behave. They are as close as you can get to a fullblood and they are remarkable.
The Swiss breed standard, black face, black ears, black knees, black feet, dense crimped fleece, gentle and curious temperament, expresses most fully and consistently in fullblood animals. If you're investing in this breed, understanding that distinction before you buy helps give you a total understanding of the Swiss breed .
A Breed Worth the Effort
We've shipped fullblood Valais Blacknose lambs across the entire country, California, Maine, Florida, and nearly everywhere in between. The people who reach out to us come from every background imaginable. Some are experienced livestock producers. Some have never owned a sheep in their life. What the successful ones share is not experience, it's a genuine willingness to learn and a commitment to doing right by the animal. If that's you, we'd love to talk.
Our buyers guide at valaisblacknoseofloverslane.com walks through our process, what we look for in buyers, and what you can expect from us. Reach out when you're ready. We're not in a hurry, and we don't do hard sells. We'd rather you make the right decision for your farm than a fast one.
