Swiss Standard vs. American Show Ring

In the United States, there are two general paths in the show world:

  • Programs focused on maintaining traditional Swiss breed standards

  • Programs participating in the American club lamb or show circuit

Neither path is right or wrong. They simply prioritize different presentation styles and goals. Understanding which direction you plan to take helps determine the type of lamb that fits your program.

The right Valais Blacknose lamb isn’t chosen by chance. It’s chosen with purpose. When buyers understand their goals first, they’re far more likely to select a lamb that fits their farm, their family, and their long-term plans.

What Should You Consider Before Choosing a Lamb?

Start by asking:

  • Are you planning to show under Swiss breed standards?

  • Are you entering the American club lamb or show circuit?

  • Is this a 4H or youth project?

  • Are you building a long-term breeding program?

Your goal determines what traits matter most.

What We Look for When Selecting Lambs

With over 50 years of livestock selection and show ring experience, we evaluate:

  • Structure and balance

  • Bone and movement

  • Correct markings

  • Temperament

  • Long-term breeding potential

Selection isn’t about what looks “cute” today. It’s about what develops correctly over time.
