Our Shift From Breed-Up to Fullblood Valais, and Why It Matters

We started this journey in 2019, back when the only real option was the breed-up program. Like most, we dove in and did the work, learning as we went, step by step. And while we’re grateful for that foundation, things have changed.
For the past three years, we’ve focused completely on fullblood Valais Blacknose sheep. We do still have one polled F4 ewe that we’ve kept out of curiosity, just to observe how genetics continue to play out, but the rest of our flock is now 100% fullblood.
Why the shift? Because fullbloods allow us to stay laser-focused on the breed we love, no guesswork, no compromises.
Why Fullbloods Make Sense for Us:
It keeps things simpler. No tracking generation levels. No debating if the markings "made it through." Just real Valais, start to finish.
It helps us learn faster. Working only with fullbloods gives us consistency, and with consistency, you get clarity. We’re seeing patterns, adjusting as needed, and getting better each year.
It fits our style. We like doing one thing well. Raising fullblood Valais is our lane, and we’re staying in it.
It supports the breed. By focusing on fullbloods, we’re helping preserve the genetics, structure, and temperament that make Valais Blacknose sheep so special.
Looking Ahead
This isn’t about proving a point or chasing prestige. It’s about raising the kind of sheep we want to be around and doing it with care, patience, and purpose.
If you’re curious about fullblood Valais, or thinking about starting your own journey, we’re always happy to share what we’ve learned.
Thanks for following along.
